We know if can sometimes be tricky if you’re living in a rental property to put your ‘stamp’ on it and make it feel like yours and like it’s really your home.
A lot of the time how much you can do to your rental property depends on how accommodating and flexible your landlord is, as there are some landlords don’t want their property visibly changed, where as others are more than happy for you to decorate, and if you’re lucky maybe even pay towards it (see popular Instagrammer Kerry Lockwood’s blog for rental inspiration!). Don’t forget though to ask your landlord or the property management company before making any changes.
Here are some ideas as to how you can make your rental property feel like a home:
- Soft furnishings can jazz up plain rental furnishings. Choose an accent colour or bold pattern and use curtains and cushions to tie this in.
- If you choose a non-furnished property you will be able to purchase your own furniture to your own taste, and this is an obvious way to really showcase your style.
- Temporary wall and tile decals are getting better and better and these are brilliant to simply stick on to walls or bathroom tiles and then peel off when you leave.
- Display art and photos – don’t forget to check you are ok to use nails in the wall before you do so. Velcro ‘Command Strips’ are even better for displaying items on the wall and are strong, yet peel off when it’s time to move on.
- Accessorise with quirky and stylish accessories such as colourful rugs and floor lamps that will then be great for future places.
- Plants really brighten up any space from bedroom to bathroom and can feel really homely.
- Get creative with storage – you may not be able to put up shelves, but ladder-style shelves that lean against walls are a great storage statement, and IKEA do some great free standing shelving units eg the good old ‘Kallax’ units!
- Mirrors help to create the illusion of more space and can be leaned against walls rather than having to be hung.
- If your landlord has given you permission to decorate, make sure that you also check if they are expecting you to return the property to its original condition when you move out- painting over dark navy walls isn’t much fun so it might be best to play it safe with lighter colours!
